Reference: Fraud scheme involving police impersonators
On 3-14-10 the Portsmouth Police Department took a report from a local restaurant. The manager described a telephone call they had received from a male who identified himself as an investigator with the F.B.I. The caller stated that his “special investigations” unit was conducting an operation and then asked the restaurant manager for the name and credit card information for customers that are not “regular customers.”
The manager declined to give the caller the requested information and called the Portsmouth Police Department.
Local or federal law enforcement would not call a business or residence asking for credit card information. Never give personal or account information to an unknown person.
If you receive a similar solicitation, please call your local police department.
